Hello! The books, magazines and websites are all telling us to get it together at home and we will be happier. I’m on board!

However, progress is slow, and frankly, it’s a little like bailing water out of a sinking ship. This organizing job doesn’t come that easily to me and I’m not sure why? Sigh…
I constantly fluctuate between “Must Get Stuff Done” and “OMG This Is Hopeless, Why Do I Bother?” If you feel like that too, well Cheers! I feel your pain. I’m reasonably sure that some moms (not me) have organizing all under control. I am unnaturally curious about how other people get it all done. I really need some tips on home organization!
What’s your secret?! Tell me your secrets!
Where Do I Start?
I’ll start with defining the areas of my life that really need my attention. You can do this too, in a journal or on a list you stick on the refrigerator. You know what they say, “out of sight, out of mind…” Keep your list handy so you can cross off as you make progress. It does feel good to cross stuff off the list, doesn’t it?
- Organizing My Home
- Keeping A Calendar In My Head (not good)
- Cleaning Out My Garage
- Getting Rid of Clutter
- Finishing Home Improvement Projects
- Feeding My Family 3 Squares A Day
- Finding & Maintaining A Relaxing Place To Be Creative
- Quality Time With My Husband and Kids
- Personal Exercise Time For Me
- Enjoying Downtime Without Guilt
- Wasting Time
Rewind to my pre-kid idea of how I would run my household. Turns out it is different than what is actually happening over here in real time. For one thing, we all eat more and make more messes than I was prepared for. This life is beautiful but messy so it’s no wonder I arrived at unmotivated.
I often find myself wishing I was more like my new mom self. She sure was more patient and nicer. Everything was new and my babies needed me to be at my best. Now I have teens, and well…the frustration comes with knowing they could step up to help more but they are sooo busy now!
Anyway… Yes! I WAS nicer before the never ending stream of to-do’s was going through my head on repeat, repeat, repeat… I’m just going to have to make peace with the woman I am now though, because the to-do’s aren’t going away and I don’t want to constantly be weighed down by them! Now, where do I start?
Finances: Why the heck do I keep paper I don’t need anymore? I have a perfectly good office that is overfilled with old paper, paper, paper. I’m taking a load to a shredding company ASAP. Maybe a more organized office will inspire me in the finance department?
And how many years have I wanted a label maker? I’m getting one, darn it! Label makers are not frivolous and I deserve to own one! Again, more inspiration to get into that office and do some work!

Organizing My Home: I have the expectation that things should be cute and uncluttered. Oh, those expectations, they are forever tripping me up.
It’s time to get serious WEEKLY to tackle the stuff! It’s the staying on track with the weekly that I can’t keep up with. I hereby vow to go through each and every drawer and cabinet in the house and donate, sell, toss, whatever I don’t need to hold onto. I said it here, it’s official!
Don’t Do It…
Don’t keep everything in your head, it’s exhausting! I recently bought a giant calendar to leave on the counter. They have some awesome options at Erin Condren. #affiliate The whole family can write on it!
Keeping it updated…sooo NOT one of my strengths, but I am trying. I also use my iPhone to keep track of emailed appointments and invitations. The calendar is one of those topics of discussion I’ve had with many moms. It seems like some favor paper, some favor electronic. I’m here to tell you it’s possible to have a combination of online and paper calendars in the house to keep you organized.
Planners are all the rage now, you can get one of those and make your to-do lists pretty. As I mentioned, it is satisfying to cross stuff off the list!
Some good apps to try?
- Centriq (Scan those product manual barcodes and recycle the instructions.)
- Decluttr (Decluttr is the fast, easy and totally free way to sell cell phones, tech, CDs, DVDs, games and books.)
- Evernote (Capture ideas and inspiration in notes, voice, and pictures.)
- Offerup (The simpler way to buy and sell locally…)
- Sortly (Inventory made simple.)
- Time Timer (Enjoy stress-free time management.)
- and my personal favorite Trello
If you are ready to get some of those digital photos off the computer and onto the walls of your home or in a custom book consider a gallery wall and getting some prints or canvases.
Cleaning Out My Garage & Decluttering: Sadly, this will require some actual man hours, trips to donate, messes to step over for awhile. Here is a list of things that need to get sorted… I work on this often, but it just keeps accumulating!
- Books and Magazines
- Sports Gear that doesn’t fit or is too used or broken
- Junk Mail
- Kids clothing that doesn’t fit or is too worn
- Craft Supplies
- Kitchen Tools and Appliances
- Instructions/Product paperwork
- Old Paint and Hazardous Cleaning/Gardening Products
- Kid school work or art (I think I will narrow my collection down and store it in some new accordion files. #affiliate
- Old Linens
- Jars of coins to cash in
I will check back in with my progress and my Part II after I’ve accomplished some of this list! Try it with me and give me some pointers in the comments! Happy Organizing!
