Ready to Host Your Blog?

Hello, new blogger! So you’re ready to start and host your blog, but the idea of choosing web hosting has got you nervous, worried, overwhelmed and confused. In fact, you’re not even sure you know what web hosting is, much less how to choose the right one for your blog.

The tricky part of choosing this at the beginning of your blogging journey is that you most likely won’t want to spend too much (probably because the whole reason you are starting a blog in the first place is to MAKE money, not SPEND money.) Am I right?

I hear you. You’re not alone. This is indeed a decision you should make with care and it can be confusing.

Well, what then IS web hosting? If you run a blog or website, the pages, posts, images, videos, plug-ins, etc. all need a place to live on a SERVER somewhere. You will pay monthly or annually for this server space. Typically you can save a little on hosting fees by committing to terms of 1-3 years. Another service you will pay for is for securing the “address” of your site.

This article contains affiliate links which means if you make a purchase through one of my recommendations I may earn a small commission, at no additional cost to you.

Host your blog. It's a little like parking your car in a crowded parking lot image.

It’s a little like parking your car. If you work in an urban area and pay for parking you will understand. The less you pay, the longer your walk to your building and fewer perks you will receive, right? Whereas, if you pay a little more you might have your own closer, covered, safer parking spot with larger stalls and maybe even an elevator. Sure, at first it seems like you’re saving big, but ultimately you are probably not.

Ideally, you want top of the line infrastructure paired with reliability, someone to contact if you’re stuck and not too many speed bumps while you’re trying to merge onto the information super highway. So that being said, don’t spend your time trying to park in a budget lot where you will have no perks. Your time is too valuable for this, and trust me, there are lots of other things you will need to do as a new blogger.

What Kind of Hosting Do You Need?

Self Hosted

Who – if you are a technically savvy web developer with the know-how to keep your web site and it’s servers and equipment fast and safe, you could go self hosted. This is probably not an option for most new bloggers. Better save that for later! (And keep reading to find out more about WordPress.com vs. WordPress.org)

Shared Hosting

If you are medium savvy technical person or looking for some cost sharing benefits, you could go with regular shared hosting.

Managed Hosting

Now, if you are looking for an enhanced WordPress environment where you don’t have to put much effort into the technical, security and optimizing elements of a website, then you possibly desire managed hosting. It’s a step above shared hosting. Sometimes you’ll see this service offered as “premium” or “business” and yes, it always costs a little more than the basic shared hosting price.

Free Hosting

Just starting out with a hobby blog? Well, it pays to think ahead here, anticipate for growth… You could be really disappointed if your site flourishes but you’ve set up on a free platform lacking the ability to monetize your site with products from affiliates (like Amazon) or ads. Also, if you are set up this way your URL will be extra long, not your own domain name and it looks a little less professional. (It might look like this: yourgroovysite.wordpress.com instead of www.yourgroovysite.com) Your readers might not even be able to remember your URL when they want to drop by your blog and see what’s new. Some of the free platforms are WordPress.com, Blogger, Wix, and Weebly.

Please read this, I won’t go into it here but it’s very good information. WordPress.com vs. WordPress.org

I wish I knew this when I started my blog!

  1. Where to host your blog – self hosted, shared hosting, free hosting…My personal choice for hosting is with Lyrical Host. I’ll tell you all about it below!
  2. What are you sharing on your site? If you are sharing lots of workout videos for example, you are going to want a LOT more storage than a regular blog. You can’t go wrong with lots of bandwidth and unlimited disc space!
  3. When can you contact customer support and how long does it take them to respond?… 24/7 is the best of course! When you accidently make an edit that wipes out your site at midnight, you are going to need someone to patch you back up!
  4. How to host your own blog… unless this isn’t your first rodeo, you are going to need some technical support and a place to turn for questions and problems! Intuitive tools made for bloggers and entrepreneurs, not just developer tools that leave you scratching your head.
